We post our Member Spotlight each month to recognize exemplary members of the CalALTs community. This month's Member Spotlight is Joshua Barlow from Valhalla Fiduciary! Prior to his career as a non-executive independent director of alternative funds, Joshua spent 12 years at PAAMCO where he was the Head of Operational Due Diligence and Accounting. He also serves on the CalALTs Best Practices Committee that releases an annual white paper each year. View our interview with him below.

Current Endeavors and Background

What is your current role?

I’m Managing Director of Valhalla Fiduciary which I launched in July of 2018.

What is your current focus relative to alternative investments?

My focus is being a non-executive independent director on alternative fund boards.  Prior to launching this business I spent 12 years at PAAMCO where I was the Head of Operational Due Diligence and Accounting.

What do you find most rewarding about your career?

The most rewarding aspect of my career is easily the relationships you build with others.  I love our industry and I’m always impressed with how good the people are.  At times there are negative things said about the alternative asset industry but I’m constantly interacting with some of the most incredibly smart and talented people but also really good people.  At every step in my career I’ve been lucky to learn at the feet of incredible people.

CalALTs Leadership

What is your current role within the chapter?

I serve as a member of the Best Practices Committee.  My favorite thing is that each year the committee writes a best practices whitepaper for CalALTS.

When did you join?  When and how did you get actively involved?

I joined CalALTs and the Best Practices Committee in April of 2016.  PAAMCO was a supporter of CalALTS and I first joined by helping to put on one of the AltsOC events.

What do you value most about CalALTs?

I love the events and meeting other members of CalALTS.  But also enjoy helping to write and coordinate the Best Practices whitepaper each year and interacting with the committee.

Advice for Young Professionals

What advice do you have for young people getting started in the biz?

Every school semester I participate in a mentor program from my alma mater.  My biggest advice I tell the college students is to talk to and learn from as many people as possible.  Your path won’t be the exact same as anyone else.  But learn from everybody and believe in yourself.

Fun Fact to Share

In addition to my business my passion is my family.  Our four children range from ages 10 to 18.  For the past ten years in my “free time” you can find me coaching at least one of my kids’ soccer or flag football teams.
